Challah

1h 5m
12 servings

A traditional Jewish braided bread that's soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for holidays or any meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 6 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F), 1 tbsp yeast, and 2 tbsp sugar. Stir and let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add 1/4 cup oil, 1 egg, and 1/2 tbsp salt to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
  3. Gradually add 3 cups flour and stir until a dough forms. Knead in the remaining 3 cups flour, adding up to 1/4 cup additional water if the dough is too dry. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic or use kitchen aid mixer
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled.
  5. Punch down dough, divide into 3 equal parts. Roll each into a long rope. Braid the ropes together, pinching ends to seal. Place on a greased baking sheet.
  6. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Brush with egg wash and add toppings. Our favourites are any of: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything by the bagel spice, Rosemarry, or zaatar
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake for 45 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  9. Cool on a wire rack.
