Old Fashioned Easy Apple Crisp
A classic, comforting apple crisp featuring spiced, orchard-fresh apples topped with a buttery, golden oat crumble. Picking your own apples makes this recipe truly exceptional.
Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice
Oat Crumble Topping
- 1 cups light brown sugar
- 3/4 cups old fashioned oats
- 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch kosher salt
- 1/2 cups cold unsalted butter, diced
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 F.
- Grease an 8x8 baking dish or a deep-dish pie plate with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
- Peel, core, and chop the apples into bite-sized chunks.
- Toss the apples in a large bowl with the granulated sugar, 3/4 tsp cinnamon, and lemon juice until evenly coated.
- Transfer the apple mixture into your prepared baking dish.
- Combine the brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, and salt in a separate medium bowl.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingertips to work the butter in until the mixture resembles coarse, pea-sized crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples, patting it down gently.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple juices are bubbling around the edges.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
For the best texture, use a mix of apple varieties like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith. If you have time, serve with a generous scoop of high-quality vanilla bean ice cream.
