Masoor Dal | Instant Pot & Stovetop Red Lentils

A quick, aromatic red lentil dal cooked in an Instant Pot, perfect for a comforting meal.

  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1 1/2 cups masoor dal (split red lentils, rinsed)
  • 4 1/2 cups water
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 3/4 cups tomatoes (chopped fresh or canned)
  • 4 garlic (sliced)
  • 1 ginger (cut into 2)
  • 1-2 green chillies (sliced)
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garam masala or dal masala
  • 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • cilantro

Instructions

  1. Set the Instant Pot to saute mode. Heat the oil or ghee.
  2. Add cumin seeds and let sizzle for a few seconds.
  3. Add onions and cook until softened, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add ginger and garlic and cook for 3 minutes.
  5. Add turmeric, black pepper, and tomatoes, and cook until the tomatoes and green chilies are jammy, about 2 minutes.
  6. Add the dal, water, and salt; mix well.
  7. Cook on High Pressure for 7 minutes, then allow a natural pressure release for at least 10 minutes.
  8. Set the Instant Pot to saute mode again. Mash the dal with the back of a spoon about 15 times.
  9. Adjust consistency by adding water if a thinner, soupier dal is desired.
  10. Add garam masala and simmer for 2 minutes.
  11. Garnish with cilantro.
