- 1 cup onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, sharp, grated
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg, ground
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Arrange a layer of potatoes in the bottom of the dish.
- Scatter onions over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese over the onions.
- Repeat with another layer of potatoes, onions, and cheese.
- Whisk together sour cream, heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Pour the cream mixture evenly over the layered potatoes.
- Cover the dish and bake for 45 minutes.
- Uncover and bake until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden, about 25–30 minutes more.
- Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving.
