  • 2 lb potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, sharp, grated
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg, ground

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. Arrange a layer of potatoes in the bottom of the dish.
  4. Scatter onions over the potatoes.
  5. Sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese over the onions.
  6. Repeat with another layer of potatoes, onions, and cheese.
  7. Whisk together sour cream, heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until smooth.
  8. Pour the cream mixture evenly over the layered potatoes.
  9. Cover the dish and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Uncover and bake until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden, about 25–30 minutes more.
  11. Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving.
