This everyday fluffy white sandwich bread is soft, tender, and perfect for all your sandwich needs or as a base for toast. With a few simple ingredients and techniques, you can enjoy homemade bread that's better than store-bought.

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl, and let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter to the flour mixture.
  4. Mix until a dough forms, then knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the risen dough, then shape it into a rectangle and roll it tightly into a loaf shape.
  7. Place the shaped dough in a greased loaf pan and cover it again. Allow it to rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
