Juicy, caramelized beef simmered in a savory tomato sauce with Worcestershire and a touch of brown sugar creates a classic sloppy Joe. Pile this on toasted hamburger buns for a comforting, family-favorite meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup yellow onion, diced
  • 1 cup green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 6 oz hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper; sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic; cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  4. Add the ground beef; cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  5. Stir in the tomato paste; cook for 1 minute.
  6. Pour in the tomato sauce, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce; stir to combine.
  7. Stir in the brown sugar, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  8. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  9. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 15–20 minutes, until the mixture thickens.
  10. Toast the hamburger buns until lightly golden.
  11. Spoon the sloppy Joe filling onto the buns and serve.
